Blowouts in A pennants

Tawhero have had a brutal welcome to the Manawatuwa­nganui interclub golf A pennants.

Back in the top flight after a winning t e B-pennants last year, Tawhero were crushed 12-0 by Taihape on Sunday at the Manawatu Golf Club.

The 2016 semifinali­sts barely broke a sweat with the decisive win.

The closest battle came between No 1s Richie Nimmo and Sam Kauika with the former winning two-up.

Blowouts were the order of the day.

Palmerston North aside Wanganui 81⁄2-31⁄2.

Last season’s runner’s up, Palmerston North, look a real threat in 2017 with the additions of Junior Tatana, Tane North and Adam Rapson.

Manawatu-wanganui Toro No 1 Tatana joined the club from Foxton, Toro No 6 North transferre­d from Waiouru, while Rapson was making his return to competitiv­e golf.

But it was not a fairy tale start for them with Tatana and North losing their doubles match-up.

North also dropped his singles match to Brady Brownsharp­e four and two.

But Tatana (six and five over Justin Newland) and Rapson (five and four over Michael Tafilipepe) both picked up singles wins along with fellow Palmerston North men Brad Mcsherry, Mike Mcsherry, Regan Cording and Scott Sutherland.

Manawatu started their title swept win over defence with a 101 Foxton.

Trent Munn’s return for Manawatu proved handy with him picking up a six and five win over Foxton No 1 Lance Knowles.

Anthony Ilton-maher was the only man to register points in the singles for Foxton with a three and two win over Jon Salmon.

Wins for Manawatu came from Kirk Brough, Matt Francis, Munn, Brent Jaslarz, Craig Nash, Rhys Watkins and Guy Perry.

Feilding and Levin turned on the day’s most competitiv­e match with the former coming out on top 7-5.

The scores were level 2-2 at the end of doubles and Levin looked to be getting off strong in the singles.

Rick Serrano beat Kyle Russell two and one, Geoff Gutschlag beat Jayden Hunter six and four and Reuben Tomane beat Damian Walker one-up.

But Feilding were in strong form at the top of their order.

Stu Atkins beat Tai Walters six and four, Ben Anderson went one-up over Cruize Simpson, Liam Finlayson was too good for Kim Ballantine three and two, Tony Chettlebur­gh finished two-up against Adrian Burns and Mike Atkins beat Shaun Millard five and two.
