March roadworks signal delays

Palmerston North traffic could be crawling at a snail’s pace in places until the end of the month as roadworks cause disruptions.

Four stretches of the city’s streets will be resealed before the end of March and some detours will be in place.

City council roading manager Jon Schwass said officials were keen to take advantage of the last of the settled weather to complete their resurfacing programme.

The most central of the roads affected is Rangitikei St, from The Square to Grey St. That work was planned for next week, from Monday, March 13.

Schwass said the most disruptive work was likely to be on the Milson Line overbridge.

‘‘This will affect travel to and from the airport and in and out of the city,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ll have electronic signs in place to give road users advance warning so they can factor in time delays or take alternative routes.’’

That work was scheduled to include a weekend, from Saturday, March 25 to Tuesday, March 28.

Another two resurfacing jobs did not have set dates yet, and depended on the weather.

They were the intersection of Roberts Line and Mihaere Drive, which would take two days to complete, and the stretch of Albert St by Melody’s New World in Terrace End, which would be a one-day job.

‘‘All of the sites have people living close by, so most of the work will take place between 6.30am and 5pm.’’

The goal of the resurfacing was to make the roads smoother and quieter.
