Motorcycles stolen from field days site

- SAM KILMISTER

Central Districts Field Days staff are puzzled at reports that two farm bikes mysteriously disappeared from a Feilding company’s site over the weekend.

Event manager Brett Mcmeekin said two farm bikes were allegedly stolen from Gary Worsley’s tent on Saturday night.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the motorcycle firm said an offroad Yamaha dirt bike and Suzuki TF125 Mud Bug were taken. Both bikes were two-wheelers.

Is also said a television and DVD player were lifted from the tent.

Business manager Scott Worsley did not want to disclose any information about the bikes, although other websites value them at about $12,890 collectively.

Mcmeekin was unsure how the items would have been taken off-site.

‘‘We have 24-hour security on that site and it’s a locked site,’’ he said.

‘‘No-one can get into Manfeild. There’s six-foot barbed wire fences.

‘‘You can’t get in, put bikes on a trailer and take off.’’ Mcmeekin said another stallholder may have taken the bikes while packing up their site.

‘‘Only exhibitors can come in by car. When you’ve got over 500 sites and exhibitors you can’t trust them all.’’

In the past, some exhibitors and visitors had hidden items around the premises and then waited for the gates to open the next day to take them out, he said.

Senior Sergeant Jeff Veale said police were investigating.

‘‘The bikes were put aside and unmonitored by security,’’ he said. ‘‘It is a big site and security guards can’t be everywhere.

‘‘We’ve heard anecdotally that items have gone missing, but noone has come forward with any other complaints at this stage. We’re working out how the offender got into the site and how it has disappeared, so there’s not too many details at this point.

‘‘Locally, there are items being taken. The consistent feature is that they are insecure, so it is a timely reminder to lock your items away.’’

Manawatu Neighbourhood Support area co-ordinator Gary Stoneley said it was likely more missing items would be reported during the week.
