Mufhasa relation impresses

- TIM RYAN

The mighty Mufhasa was remembered when his close relation opened his career with a win at Avondale yesterday.

Champion galloper Mufhasa retired as a 10-time Gr I winner for managing owner David Archer.

Archer bred yesterday’s 2-yearold winner Bostonian from his mare Keepa Cheval, a half-sister to Mufhasa.

Mufhasa won 20 of his 62 starts, earning more than $3.62 million for Archer, his partner Di Wright and his children Simon and Natalie Archer.

Bred by Colin and John Thompson, Mufhasa was a $50,000 yearling purchase at Karaka for Archer, who placed the horse in the care of Auckland trainer Stephen Mckee.

John Thompson’s Rich Hill Stud at Walton has Mufhasa’s sire Pentire on their stallion roster alongside Jimmy Choux, sire of Bostonian.

The Pike stable predicts a bright future for the horse and all going to plan will give him a further start or two as a 2-year-old.

‘‘If he pulls up well he’s likely to have another run or two,’’ said stable foreman Kade Ormsby. ’’He’s always shown us plenty of abilty.’’

Archer was on-course to enjoy the win and was impressed with his new rising star.

The Pike stable takes Rangipo to Tauranga on Saturday where the son of Stryker will line-up a clear favourite in the Group II Japan NZ International (1600m).

Fresh-up at Ellerslie three weeks ago, Rangipo ran a slashing race for third over 1200m at long odds and he has thrived since.

Most punters are holding off until Tauranga track conditions are known, but one keen investor has $500 on Rangipo at $3.80.

‘‘His work has been very good this week,’’ Ormsby said.
