Food delivery is on its way

- PAUL MITCHELL

The owner of a food delivery service in Whanganui is looking for a driver so he can expand his fledgling business to Palmerston North.

In his first two weeks, Norman Tan did dinner dashes for 70 people and the Food Runners Whanganui Facebook page hit 300 likes in less than three days.

Food Runners is Tan’s first shot at starting a business. At first it was just something to do while he looked for a job, something he could keep doing on the side for a little extra money.

‘‘I honestly didn’t expect much response. I thought 20 people would be interested tops... but I’ve been incredibly busy.’’

Things went so well he decided to go for it fulltime and he has started looking for a driver to expand Food Runners to Palmerston North.

He started it after noticing there were food-delivery businesses in other parts of the country.

He would use such a service when he was studying in Dunedin for his law degree.

‘‘[As a student] I’ve had times when I wanted takeaways, but just didn’t want to go out or didn’t have a car,’’ he said.

Many of his clients don’t have transport, or they’re outside of the delivery areas of supermarkets and pizza places. About 40 per cent of his clients are elderly and there was a lot of demand for grocery delivery, so he added that service.

‘‘I like getting to meet people,’’ he said.

‘‘It creates enough money to get by and I actually enjoy it.’’
