Biggs boys grunt their way to success

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

The Papakura pair of Scott and Jared Biggs had the most grunt at the Extreme 4WD trials at Turitea Valley.

The two Biggs men, driving their homebuilt 6 litre four-wheel drive, won the sixth and final leg of the series on Sunday, flying up hills and tearing through the mud pits, which secured them second place overall for the series.

Wanganui’s Hamish Auret had a stuffed gearbox and couldn’t race, but he had already done enough during the other five legs of the series to win the overall title.

The best Manawatu drivers were Sam Thomsen and Mitch Caldow, who finished 18th in their class on Sunday and 22nd overall.

Thomsen has only had the new car for about two weeks and this was only the second time he’s driven the car after taking it for a spin at the recent Taranaki round.

Greg Mcdell was second on Sunday and Russell Luders was third.

There were 10 rollovers, but the course is made so rollovers can’t be dangerous.

A good crowd came to watch the day’s driving and they had 46 entries, which is the most drivers they have had for one legs this season.

There was also a gun display from the army, who were marshalling at the event, and a display from the rescue helicopter.

The other rounds of the competition have been at Uruti (Taranaki), Upper Hutt, Putaruru, Waihi and Whatawhata, near Hamilton.
