Cigarettes targeted in ram-raid

- KIRSTY LAWRENCE

A stolen ute was used to drive into the front of a petrol station in an attempt to steal a large amount of cigarettes.

Police were called to the BP service station on Kimbolton Rd in Feilding at 1.40am on Sunday after the ram-raid occurred.

A large amount of cigarettes was taken.

A spokeswoman said police pursued the vehicle once it had left the BP, but the offenders abandoned the ute and fled on foot. They have not been found. Some, but not all, of the cigarettes were recovered from the ute.

There were no staff working in the service station at the time of the incident.

The incident is the second ram-raid in Manawatu this month.

A stolen ute was used to break into Crank It Cycles in the early hours of April 18.

Three mountainbikes were stolen and about $20,000 of damage was caused to the front of the store when a silver ute ploughed into it at 4.30am.

The stolen bikes, worth about $17,000, have yet to be recovered.

Police are yet to catch those responsible. It is not known if the two incidents are connected.
