College start title defence with big win

- PETER BOWEN

College, Massey and High School Hockey Club got the men’s club hockey season off to a rousing start with reigning champions College winning their encounter 7-0 over a patched-up Tech College Old Boys side at the twin turfs on Saturday.

This season each 35-minute half is divided into two quarters and after three periods, College were dominant with six goals over a tiring Tech.

Aaron Purser excelled up front for College, getting a double and creating lots of chances.

Merv Young score four goals and his brother Mike Young one.

Tyler Hylton was a standout for Tech, working tirelessly. Last years men’s finalists

for most of the first period, only converting one of the many chances created.

Tom Tremain was outstanding in goal for Boys’ High.

The trend continued in the next spell, with Massey unable to add to their score as Boys’ High defended well and technically won the period when Jake Hanna scored just before the break.

Massey closed out the encounter over the final two periods with six unanswered goals to win 7-1.

Oscar Stewart, Mitchell Cronin, Kieran Scannell, Brandon Roach and Henry Westenra had outstanding games for Massey. The tightest of the matches was between and

where HSHC won 2-0.

Throughout the hard-fought game, both teams were looking to attack into the free space in behind the opposition defence.

Marist had a couple of chances go begging and HSHC had chances missed, as Marist’s defence scampered.

The stalemate was broken early in the third spell when a mis-timed hit fooled the Marist keeper and HSHC tapped it in.

Michaela Curtis was the difference up front for HSHC after Marist allowed her too much room. An own goal completing the scoring in the last quarter.

Marist upped their tempo, attacking more and pushing forward, but HSHC defence, led by Daniel Parry and Kyle Leslie, knocked the attack back again and again. Standout players were Jamie Beazley and Parry for HSHC, and Julius Cousins at centre for Marist.
