The best Mother’s Day present ever

- NICHOLAS MCBRIDE

Mother’s Day was especially true for at least one mum, who gave birth on the special occasion.

Chheng Taing and her husband Heng Tich welcomed their third son at Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday.

The young lad, who did not yet have a name, was a ‘‘gift for Mother’s Day’’, Taing said. ‘‘It is a little bit special.’’ He was born at 4am, becoming the first baby born on Sunday in Palmerston North. Taing said he was due on June 5, but had come early, born at 37 weeks and weighing in at 2.59 kilograms.

It was not such a surprise for Taing, who said her two other sons had also been born early, at 38 and 37 weeks each.

‘‘All my children have been born early. I’m used to having early births.’’

Though, she said, her newborn son did not yet resemble his brothers, who were 7 and 2.

Taing was a late admission, brought in on Saturday night, and had a normal birth.

Although she had only managed about two hours sleep on Sunday, she was in good spirits and said it was all worth it.

Originally from Cambodia, the couple have lived in New Zealand for five years, and Palmerston North for three.

Their new son was one of three born on Mother’s Day at the hospital, as of 3pm. Another two women were on the maternity ward and due to give birth too.
