Black angus beef bulls appraised in the paddock

- JILL GALLOWAY

Potential buyers like the look of angus bulls run together in an evaluation unit, before they are sold at Beef Expo today.

Seven beef breeds are represented by about 110 bulls which are being shown and sold as part of the event at Feilding’s Manfeild Stadium.

Observers were impressed by the condition of the angus bulls at the evaluation unit near Palmerston North and the shape of the 24 bulls to be sold in the afternoon.

Grant Crawshaw and Forbes Cameron both had bulls in the unit and were thrilled with their condition.

Their bulls entered the unit as 15 month old cattle, and were being sold as rising two-year-olds.

PGG lead auctioneer Bruce Orr said all the bulls looked great and it was a credit to farmer Dave Wright and Cedric Lander, who had overview of the unit.

‘‘They are very well turned out. The people here have done a great job.’’

Peter Nicol and his son Stuart Nicol from Wairarapa were thinking about buying a bull and were having a look at them in the paddock and checking out their statistics in the catalogue.

‘‘I like the bull evaluation unit because the bulls are all fed and run the same. So you are comparing apples with other apples. A breeder with one bull, might feed it up and you wouldn’t know,’’ said Peter Nicol.

Stuart Nicol said they had a hill country property and the angus breed did well on it

About 60 people checked the form of the angus bulls in a paddock at the evaluation unit.

Shorthorn and hereford bull sales were held today , and the champion of champions, the best bull of the seven breeds champions, will be found on Tuesday morning.
