Partial opening possible

One lane through the Manawatu Gorge may be open by the end of the week. NZ Transport Agency highway manager Ross I’anson said the remaining loose material from a slip on May 14 had fallen at the weekend and was cleared by helicopter sluicing. Crews had been working hard to remove the debris from the road, he said. ‘‘Everything possible will be done to reopen the gorge road to a single lane by the end of next week. We know how vital this route is for people in the region and we are focused on reopening the road as soon as possible.’’ I’anson advised anyone using the alternative routes, the Pahiatua Track and Saddle Rd, to be patient and drive to the conditions.

Pink Ribbon breakfast

Recruitment firm Palmerston North Personnel is hosting its fourth annual Pink Ribbon Breakfast Fundraiser for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation on Friday this week. Last year, the breakfast event raised $2858 for the foundation, and the organisers aimed to bring that up to $3400 this year, client manager Mason Parker said. That would bring the total raised over all four years to $10,000. Donors can contribute in a variety of ways, from online donations to raffle tickets and cupcakes.
