Late putts rescue Palmerston North

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Two last-gasp putts secured Palmerston North a place in the Manawatu-wanganui club pennants final.

Palmerston North only snuck past Taihape 6 1/2-5 1/2 in their semifinal at Marton on Sunday, and they will now play Manawatu in the final this coming Sunday, with Manawatu winning their semifinal 7 1/2-4 1/2 over Feilding, earning them a home final at Hokowhitu.

Palmerston North No 3 Mike Mcsherry had a long putt from

the back of the ninth green, which most people would expect to two putt, but he holed it to win his match 1up against Denny Thompson

No 4 Tane North also sunk six-foot putt on a sloping green on his last hole to claim victory in his matchup against Ben Cribb 1up.

If the game had been tied, because it would have been too dark for a playoff, it was likely the winner would have been decided by who won the roundrobin game and that was Taihape.

Taihape won the foursomes 2 1/2-1 1/2, but Palmerston North came back in the singles, winning 5-3.

Other singles winners for Palmerston North were Bradley Mcsherry, Regan Cording and Junior Tatana.

Duane Dick, Koke Cashell and Matt Booth had singles wins for Taihape.

In the other semifinal, defending champions Manawatu won the foursomes 2 1/2-1 1/2 and the singles 5-3 against Feilding.

Craig Nash, Dave Tarrant, Angus Findlay and Greg Shaw had wins for Manawatu.

Manawatu No 5 Micah Bremner halved with Ben Anderson and No 1s Regan Mcconaghty and Mike Atkins (Feilding) halved their match.

Feilding had singles wins through Liam Finlayson and Tony Chettleburgh.
