Manawatu continue pennants golf streak

- SHAUN EADE

Manawatu’s complete dominance in the Manawatu-wanganui A pennants rages on.

The club locked up their 11th title in 13 years as they beat 6 Palmerston North at Manawatu Golf Club on Sunday.

Their streak dates back to 2005 and features just two misses – Levin in 2009 and Marton in 2012.

Palmerston North gave Manawatu a run for their money, but still appeared one top-player away from getting one up on their rivals from across the town.

After the foursomes the scores were locked at 2-2.

So fittingly the result came down to a battle in the singles.

Manawatu lost Craig Nash from the foursomes with injury and was replaced by Ewan Westergaard, who was surprisingly not included in the initial team. Westergaard did his part for the win beating Bradley Mcsherry 6 and 5.

Angus Findlay, Greg Shaw, Guy Perry also won matches for Manawatu. Adam Rapson, Adam Orlowski won for Palmerston North while Matt Francis and Mike Mcsherry halved their match.

In the battle of the No 1s, Junior Tatana, in his first year at Palmerston North since transferring from Foxton, beat Regan Mcconaghty 2 and 1, but it was not enough to get the win.

As the games wrapped up, the players were racing the fading daylight as much as each other.

With the pennants tournament wrapped up, Manawatu’s top golfers now turn their attentions to the Order of Merit series.

This starts with the Joe Kells Memorial at the Palmerston North Golf Club on June 25.
