Ko remains world No 1, for this week at least

- GOLF

Lydia Ko remains the top women’s golfer in the world despite reports she had given up the top spot to Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn over the weekend.

Before the event, the LPGA issued some projections which showed Jutanugarn taking over the No 1 spot in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings based on player finishes at the Shoprite LPGA Classic which concluded yesterday.

However, when official rankings were run yesterday, the LPGA discovered a bug in the projection tool, releasing a statement detailing the issue.

‘‘When running the projections, the tool used the date on which the projections were run, rather than the date when the rankings would be released. Thus when projections were run last week, they included the 2015 Manulife LPGA Classic in the event count for both Lydia Ko (51 events) and Ariya Jutanugarn (58 events),’’ the statement read.

The LPGA went on to explain that Ko ‘‘maintains the No 1 position by a .01 point margin’’.

The LPGA Tour telephoned Ko and Jutanugarn to explain the confusion and set the record straight, a tour spokesman said.

Ko, who has six top-10s this season but no wins, is taking a three-week break to work on her game and recharge before returning to play the Meijer Classic beginning June 15.

Jutanugarn will have another chance to overtake Ko this week at the Manulife Classic.
