Gorge could reopen soon

- KAROLINE TUCKEY

A detailed technical report could soon give clues as to when the Manawatu Gorge road will reopen.

An update on work to fix the damaged section of State Highway 3, issued on Friday afternoon by the NZ Transport Agency, confirmed the road remains closed for the immediate future.

Two slips closed the route between Manawatu and Hawke’s Bay, after severe weather in April.

The road was also closed for more than a year following slips in 2011.

NZTA highway manager Ross l’anson said on Friday that work was largely completed. A geotechnical report was received this week that should provide more details, and staff have started analysing the data.

It should confirm if further work is needed and when traffic could be allowed back on to the road.

Woodville businesses affected by the road closure have expressed frustration at the ongoing disruptions, and there have been calls for a better long-term solution.

On Tuesday, travellers faced delays on both alternative routes, because of a crash on the Saddle Rd and a breakdown on the Pahiatua Track. The gorge’s closure has meant both routes are taking more traffic.

‘‘We understand that this lengthy closure and the uncertainty around reopening is frustrating for everyone, especially the businesses in Woodville, the Bridge Cafe, the Bridge Store and others that remain open and feel the effects of the gorge closure,’’ l’anson said.

‘‘We’re also very aware that local residents continue to be affected by the additional traffic using alternative routes.’’

Motorists are asked to drive safely while using the Pahiatua Track and Saddle Rd, and to be patient, drive to conditions, watch their speed, and obey speed limits and warning signs.
