Massey, HSHC battle to draw

Honours were shared between second-placed Massey and fourthplac­ed High School Hockey Club when they drew 3-all in the men’s club hockey championsh­ip at the twin turfs on Saturday.

In a tough, tense game the lead changed many times throughout the match, with Massey breaking the deadlock early on at a penalty corner off a drag flick by Mitchell Cronin. HSHC stuck with their game plan, equalising in the second quarter.

Massey restored the lead minutes later at 2-1 at quartertim­e.

The closeness of the score kept the match intense with patches of brilliance by both teams.

HSHC surprised Massey, drawing level and the tempo of the play picked up with each team searching for the winner. Massey thought they had it after scoring, but HSHC had the last say, equalising with 30 seconds left.

Third-placed won 3-2 over fifth-placed

who were looking for their second win of the season.

An under-manned Tech side surprised a slow Marist team by quickly scoring a drag flick and minutes later a power back shot goal to lead 2-nil at quarter break.

Marist won the third quarter, taking the lead for the first time in the match with a incisive goal.

Matt Black and Edmund Cousins had standout games for Marist, Kane Watkins and Lee Moyer for Tech.

Defending champions and Challenge Cup holders College clinically won 12-2 over

Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

Goals came at regular intervals, as Boys’ High battled to compete against dynamic passing.

There were hat-tricks to Jordan Cohen and Myles Houlahan, Aaron Purser and Ben Molloy got doubles, along with goals to Mike Young, and Roshan Govind.

Defending women’s champions and co-leader won 4-nil over a competitiv­e

College were quickly into gear, pressing Wanganui into their own half and the pressure told with an early goal, followed by two more by halftime. College moved the ball around with control, using the width of the pitch to create space.

Wanganui defended stoutly, never giving up and had the occasional burst on attack, but found the College defence too tight.

Tulin Pritchard had a standout game for College, showing pace on defence and slippery on attack.

HSHC had most of the play with some incisive passing.

Catherine Pollock scored a double and had a standout game in centre midfield and at striker.

College hustled and took the game to HSHC, never allowing them to settle.

The tempo of the game was scrappy, with HSHC struggling to turn so much domination in territory and possession in to goals.

College remained structured and determined, sprouting out occasional­ly on attack. Goal scorers were Pollock (two), Anna Willocks and Ella Poole-crowe.

The game was even, with play pulsing between the shooting circles. Girls’ High took it to Massey, scoring first at a penalty corner by Jessica Holloway.

The game was high paced for three quarters, as Massey replied with Rachel Peck having a key role in Massey’s attacks.

Peck scored for Massey to equalise and other goals scorers were Karla Wilson and Mary Rose Scanton.

Girls’ High kept competing and had a chance to close the gap, earning a penalty stroke that was saved.
