Boxon threaten century in drubbing of Magpies
Everything seemed to go Whanganui Boxon’s way during their 90-6 hiding of the Ohakea Magpies in the latest round of the club rugby league competition.
Boxon looked as good as they have done all season, as they dominated the game at Whanganui on Saturday.
The scoreline could have been more if not for five disallowed Boxon tries for forward passes.
Even without that though, Whanganui were better in every facet of the game and fullback Matty Rangi carved up the Magpies, scoring a hat-trick.
In the absence of halfback Haze Reweti, five-eighth Bernard Matthews had a great game with his ball distribution and scored a
try and was accurate with the boot.
Workhorse lock Woody Martin tackled everything and got a try himself.
Up 48-0 at halftime, Boxon took a while to get back into it after the break because they were trying to score from every play.
But they settled things down and they started running in tries again.
The Magpies, who were coming off the bye last week, did manage to get on the board, scoring a try with 15 minutes to go.
Ohakea’s standout players were centre Aled Poole, fullback Zeb Rakatau and hooker Hamahona.
The other game was one sided as well, as the pumped the 76-16 at Fitzherbert Park on Sunday.
Kia Ora rested a few of their top players and others with niggling injuries, to give other players in their squad a run and they didn’t drop a beat.
There were a few mistakes from Kia Ora, but they were still on top for the whole game. They led 48-8 at halftime. Second rower Te Utanga Tautuhi and Matt Malama, who are both usually bench forwards, starred in the win, halfback Jahlon Governor controlled the game well and Pepa Moefili was solid at hooker.
