Rugby legends pedal for charity

- GEORGIA FORRESTER

All Blacks and Lions legends have donned Lycra and are peddling their way up the country for charity.

The rugby greats are taking part in the Ride of the Legends Tour, cycling from Wellington to Auckland in an effort to fundraise for people with disabilities.

Former All Blacks captain Wayne ‘‘Buck’’ Shelford said there were sore bums, tight Lycra, and a lot of laughs and conversations.

Shelford was one of about 50 people cycling into Palmerston North on Monday, as part of the July 2-7 cycle tour.

Although he cycles, the former No 8 said he had ‘‘never done this before’’.

The team of men and women would cycle about 600 kilometres.

Shelford admitted he had done little training, but had found the tour a lot of fun, with interesting conversations shared along the way.

The money raised would go to the Conductive Education charity, which offers training for children and adults with motor disorders, such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

Former All Blacks Ian Kirkpatrick, Ian Jones and former British and Irish Lions players Peter Winterbottom and Rodger Arneil are just some of the wellknown names involved in the ride.

The ride is taking place between the second and third tests between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions.

Conductive Education chairwoman Trudy Health said there had been a lot of banter, fun and laughs shared along the way.

In Masterton, Kirkpatrick paid tribute to Sir Colin Meads, who was very ill with pancreatic cancer.
