Inconsistent Manukura Black overcome Rahui

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Manukura Black had to work hard to stay on top of the premier club netball competition against a pesky Rahui side.

Manukura won 59-49 at the Arena on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t a polished performance from the former champions.

Manukura were trying to hard at the start of the game, throwing unrealistic passes into the circle, while Rahui quietly went about their business and were even until the final minutes of the quarter.

At the start of the second spell Manukura got things going and with Diahn Tepania-strickland feeding the circle well, Emily Autagavaia was making it look easy, as she shot 48 from 52.

Manukura also had defender Antonia Hei Hei in great form, pestering everything Rahui were doing on attack and she also threw some good long passes.

In the second half Manukura weren’t looking after the ball and a change at the shooting end for Rahui had them looking a lot better.

Maraea Murray shifted from defence to goal shoot and they started to erase the 33-22 halftime deficit.

Her and Kylie Gardner closed the gap to seven goals, but Manukura came back to life in the fourth quarter.

The first and third quarters were even, but Manukura dominated the other two.

Hinekura Winiata was solid in defence for Rahui and also played a quarter at centre and one at goal attack.

Shaani Temata-frost was good for Manukura at goal attack, doing a bit of playmaking.

A mammoth night of shooting by Rochelle Fourie guided

to a 71-39 win over The win puts Manukura above Rahui on the table, into fourth place.

Tall Manukura goal shoot Fourie had a field day against the luckless Feilding side, as she was getting the ball on a platter and shot 57 from 65.

Wing attack Diaz Tepaniastrickland’s circle feeding was great and made life easy for Fourie, who could receive the ball from anywhere.

Feilding on the other hand hardly got the ball to their shooters in the first half and were down 37-17 at halftime.

Feilding had the odd patch of looking good in the second half, but were too far off the pace and were slow with the ball when they did have it.

Manukura and Fourie had too much ball to be stopped.

Other standouts for Manukura were centre and wing defence

Red Manukura Feilding A2.

Ariana Tepania and goal defence Celia Autagavaia.

The combination between Feilding shooter Iri Tuhura and wing attack Kayla Hemopo was working well and Jordyn Rogers-holden was good in mid court, too.

put away 77-50, but the win was marred by an ankle injury to captain and defender Hapai Selby-law.

After a close first quarter, Massey scored a huge 25 goals in the second quarter to by up 41-24 at halftime.

Massey had the better of the second half too, but could rest easy after they had given themselves such a big buffer.

Massey shooter Kamie Veikoso was busy with 41 from 47, while Keaghan Seymour didn’t miss a goal, scoring a perfect 29 from 29. College shooter Manta Maxwell was almost as accurate, shooting 30 from 31.

Selby-law landed awkwardly in the final quarter, doing what could be a serious ankle injury, and had to be carried off court.

41-37. Trailing 21-19 at halftime and 31-28 after three quarters, Feilding dominated the final spell, which they won 13-6 to overtake the schoolgirls.

Feilding’s Kesa Talka only missed one shot at goal with 21 from 22.

The win moved Feilding up into third place, but they are a long way off the top two, who have all but locked up places in the final.

The competition now takes a twoweek break until July 25 due to school holidays and national agegroup tournaments, which start next week.
