Rep golf teams to play Wellington

- SHAUN EADE

Manawatu-wanganui Golf have named a strong line-up for their representative clash with Wellington at the Otaki Golf Club on Sunday.

The annual clash involves senior men, women, masters men and junior men.

Selectors were handed the challenge of picking the team without watching players’ form at the Horowhenua Open, which was planned to act as a final trial.

The second event on the Manawatu-wanganui Order of Merit event, held at the Levin Golf Club, had to be postponed on July 23 when heavy rain made the course too wet.

It has since been rescheduled to August 27, one week after the Wanganui Open.

The senior men’s team features many of the same faces as usual in Junior Tatana, Regan Cording, Guy Perry and Regan Mcconaghty who are joined by experienced

campaigner Ewan Westergaard and youngsters Greg Shaw and Liam Finlayson.

Hayden Ring returns to the

Manawatu-wanganui fold. He was a regular until a change in rules in the Wellington pennants meant he was unable to play for Manawatuwanganui last year.

But he played for Hawkestone this year which meant he was eligible.

He is one of a group of players representing B Pennants clubs with Shay Melis (Marton), Adam Orlowski (Waiouru) and Sean Griggs (Linton Camp) also named.

Matt Francis rounds out the 12-man team with Cory Higgs and Adam Rapson picked as reserves.

Missing from last year’s Toro team are Mike Atkins and Tane North.

The women’s team is headlined by the return of Brydie Hodge, who was studying in America last year.

She will take some pressure of young star Tara Raj, who will play at No 2.

The rest of the team is Tania Hook, Mudra Lakhani, Lily Griffin, Joanne Wilton-eadie, Rebecca Hopper and Lisa Cotton with Carron Thompson the reserve.

Both Jill Hall and Leanne Brown are missing from the women’s Toro team.
