Putting on a show for retirees
Freyberg High School bands spread some joy by sharing their music with retirees in a special concert.
About 40 music students performed as part of the latest Prime Timers concert organised by Palmerston North Crossroads Church on Thursday.
The concerts have been held regularly by the church for 15 years to provide entertainment and a social outlet for retirees, particularly from rest homes. Blanche Lauridsen, one of the organisers, said the shows regularly attracted about 150 viewers.
Freyberg, along with several other schools, hold an annual performance.
Freyberg head of music Dave Edmonds conducted the Freyberg Brass Band and Senior Concert Band who played concert band numbers, including City of Lights, Farandole, and The Highlander.
Lauridsen said the school’s performances were eagerly anticipated.
‘‘They come from about 13 rest homes and they love to see the young people perform – you see it on their faces.’’
While many retirement homes send vanloads of residents, the church also sends a bus to pick people up that might find it hard to get to the concert otherwise.
‘‘Some people can’t get out, but it gives them something to talk about and tell their families. We even had a lady that came in a bed because she didn’t get out at all,’’ she said.
Audience member Ernie Whitelock, 76, said the bands were ‘‘excellent’’.
‘‘The trombone was quite amazing. It’s all for the elderly folks here. I think they look forward to it.’’
Edmonds said the concert was a valuable practice opportunity for the students before the school’s big Art-a-palooza.
The three-night series of concerts on August 9, 10 and 11 feature a different programme each night. Tickets are $2 from the school office and at the door.
