Another squash title for Girls’ High

Palmerston North Girls’ High school cemented their place as the powerhouse of schoolgirl squash by winning their third consecutiv­e national title at the weekend.

Girls’ High beat Napier Girls’ High School 5-0 in the national secondary schools final at Squashgym Palmerston North on Sunday, the third year in a row they have won the competitio­n.

Having had the bye in the first round, Girls’ High didn’t drop a game at the tournament, also beating Havelock North High School 5-0 and Marlboroug­h Girls’ College 5-0.

Te Puke High School beat Marlboroug­h 5-0 to finish third.

The Girls’ High B team finished 13th, having been seeded 10th.

They lost 4-1 to Whangarei Girls’ High School and 4-1 to St Matthew’s Collegiate School, then beat Katikati College 4-1 and Tawa College 4-1.

Palmerston North Boys’ High School lived up to their seeding, finishing third.

Boys’ High beat Tauranga Boys’ College 3-2 in their final playoff game at the event.

Top seeds Westlake Boys’ High School defended their title, beating St Paul’s Collegiate School 3-2 in the final.

In Boys’ High’s games they beat Marlboroug­h Boys’ College 5-0, Liston College 5-0 and Hamilton Boys’ High School 5-0, but lost to St Paul’s 5-0 in the semifinal.

The Boys’ High B team finished 23rd.

They lost 5-0 to Whangarei Boys’ High School, beat Taupo-nui-a-tia College 4-1, lost 3-2 to St Paul’s B, lost 3-2 to Auckland Grammar School B and beat Hawera High School 3-2 in their finals match.

Girls’ High player Annaleise Faint was named at No 1 for the New Zealand secondary schools trans-tasman team and her brother Corbin, of Boys’ High, was named captain of the New Zealand boys team.
