English pips Ardern in trust survey

Prime Minister Bill English is the party leader most trusted to do what he says, according to a poll published yesterday, with new Labour leader Jacinda Ardern close behind.

When people were asked ‘‘which of these politician­s do you trust most to do what they say they will do’’, English was chosen by 31 per cent of respondent­s, while Ardern came in second with 26 per cent.

There was a large gap in the Herald-zb-kantar TNS poll back to NZ First leader Winston Peters in third with 14 per cent, while remaining party leaders were well down in low single figures.

Opportunit­ies Party leader Gareth Morgan topped the alsorans, in fourth with 4 per cent. Behind him was former Greens coleader Metiria Turei on 2 per cent, United Future leader Peter Dunne on 2 per cent, Act leader David Seymour on 1 per cent, and Maori Party co-leader Tu Ururoa Flavell, who did not rate. Twenty per cent of respondent­s were unsure.

The online poll of 1000 respondent­s began on August 2 – the day after Ardern took over as Labour leader. It finished on August 8 – before Turei resigned as the Green’s co-leader on Wednesday.

While both the Green and Maori parties had co-leaders during the polling period, the survey only included Turei and Flavell – the most senior of the co-leaders in terms of experience and party list ranking.

Asked who should be prime minister should a Labour-nz First coalition be in government, 47 per cent of respondent­s chose Ardern, 13 per cent wanted Peters, and 28 per cent said it should be the leader of whichever party had the largest party vote.
