Luxury icecream comes to NZ

- ANUJA NADKARNI

Icecream lovers rejoice: Haagendazs is coming to New Zealand next month.

After weeks of hype on social media, the high-end American icecream maker says it will be hitting supermarket shelves around the country on September 12.

The brand will launch with five flavours, with each 457-millilitre tub costing $12.50.

Haagen-dazs marketing manager Keezia Haste said the company’s expansion reflected ‘‘ever-increasing consumer demand for premium and luxurious food products’’.

The five flavours include macadamia nut brittle, salted caramel, vanilla, Belgian chocolate, and strawberry and cream.

Founded in 1961 by Reuben Mattus in the Bronx in New York, the company has gone on to sell in more than 90 countries worldwide. The icecreams are now made in France.

Haagen-dazs relaunched in Australia last September after a failed attempt there about 10 years ago.

Following its success with a string of pop-up shops across Australia, the company decided to give the market another shot.

But this will be the first time Kiwis get to taste the icecream on home soil.

Haagen-dazs has already spurred interest through its social media pages, with many followers expressing their excitement about the announcement.

One person said: ‘‘Finally! We won’t need to get a fix when we go overseas.’’

Fellow American icecream maker Ben and Jerry’s launched in New Zealand two years ago and has since set up its own stores in Auckland.
