Feilding Prime Stock Sale Monday September 4

Every week it surprises those at the prime sale with the numbers of heavy male hoggets. Earlier predictions that there would not be an outlet for them have come to nothing although they still cannot match the lighter and medium hoggets on a cents/kg basis. The sheer number of heavy hoggets at the start of this sale just kept the lid on sale prices a little with the main buyers not pushing each other too hard but prices noticeably lifted as the sale continued. The heaviest hoggets were very heavy with R Stantiall selling 29 for $184.50 and another 132 selling for $180 or more and the numbers of heavy hoggets was only slightly fewer than the medium hoggets with more buyers in the medium hogget market each week.

Store hoggets were on a par with recent sales but without many buyers chasing them too hard.

Most of a very small ewe entry were heavier ewes, most likely shedded out from the lambing mobs for not carrying a lamb. The heavy ewes lifted in value with one buyer looking for a top-up and a local trade buyer operating. The medium ewes were firm and the lighter ewes remained steady.

Not much to report on the cattle sale as there were no male cattle offered at all. A number of the cows offered were in-calf but that made no difference as works buyers were getting most of the cows. The yarding virtually all originated from the dairy industry and was generally only of boner quality.

Feilding Store Stock Sale Friday September 1

The lift in ewes with lambs at foot numbers and another large entry of yearling friesian bulls was the most noticeable aspect of this sale. Ewes with lambs at foot sold well last week which attracted greater numbers forward this week. When ‘‘Awatoitoi’’, Masterton sold two pens of ewes with single lambs for $100 and $99 it served to lift the market for the rest of the offering and they again sold well this week. A pen of 198 later lambing scanned in lamb ewes from R Gorringe, Mangaweka, also sold well for $154.50 and $154.

After Wednesday’s hogget fair, the hogget entries were always going to be reduced and only 2820 came forward. The heaviest hoggets remained steady on last week’s levels. 88 woolly cryptorchids from the Bryant Bros, Ohariu Valley, sold for $146 and 100 shorn ewe hoggets from CN Alabaster, Taihape, sold for $138.50 although they were in a drench withholding period. As the hogget sale moved into the lighter and longer term hoggets, those hoggets firmed again to the point where last week’s slight ease was recovered and sale prices were similar to a fortnight ago.

The first day of spring saw an increase in interest in the cattle market and the two year old steers lifted by up to 20 cents/kg. Kilmister Farm, Hunterville, sold 10 three year old angus steers for $1785 ($3.22) and T Eade, Bulls, at $3.29 and Dalvey Partnership, Marton, at $3.48 both sold two year old angus steers for $1560. Numbers were not high in either section. The good day continued for Tim Eade when he sold 17 yearling angus steers for $1170 ($3.78) with the better yearling steers lifting in step with their older brothers.

Older bulls were not out in numbers. $1510 ($3.09) was the money for 5 beef cross bulls from Law Bros, Taihape, a price that was matched ($3.17) by 15 friesians from Jane Allen Farming, Apiti. Yearling bull entries were much reduced from last week and sale prices firmed again. Murrayfield, Ohakea, entered a number of pens of very good yearling friesian bulls with 16 selling for $1085 ($3.24) and another 13 for $1095 ($3.19). The great majority of the yearling bulls were friesians and in demand.

Few heifers were offered and even fewer caught the eye. A couple of pens of simmental cross yearling heifers were offered by Westview Farming, Pohangina Valley. These were sold in colour lines with 18 selling for $910 ($3.39) to lead the yearling heifer section.

The place is drying out now so further interest in store cattle can be expected.

Sheep (4,343): ewes SIL (198), $154-$154.50; ewes (521) with LAF (760), $68.50-$100; hoggets (2,820)’ 42-43kg, $140-$146, $3.27-$3.43, steady; 36-40kg, $126-$142, $3.26-$3.73, steady; 32-35kg, $123.50-$134, $3.75-$4.06, slight rise.

Cattle (838): steers; 3 year (18), 510-554kg, $1675-$1785, $3.22-$3.28; 2

The rather grandly named Supplementary Hogget Fair took just over one hour to sell 7100 hoggets. With the Monday prime sale attracting much larger yardings of prime lambs and hoggets in recent years, the entries were never likely to be large and one of the two major livestock companies did not enter any sheep.

The sheer number of heavy hoggets exceeded the ability of the large traders to ‘‘blend’’ them into their drafts and these heavy sheep sell for marginally less the heavier they get above the medium weight hoggets. They still record the headline prices, however, with Kim Richardson’s Wereroa Partnership, Marton, selling 277 male hoggets for $188 and 76 ewe hoggets for $162 to claim line honours in both sections and Tom Willis, Marton, was second across the line, selling 227 male hoggets for $179.

The heaviest hoggets eased back somewhat from recent highs, influenced by the higher numbers, but the store hoggets offered continued to sell to solid demand. Selling these sheep today will naturally reduce numbers for upcoming prime and store sales.

Total (7104): 52-64kg, $157-$188, $2.93-$3.33; 46-50kg, $154.50-$171, $3.18-$3.49; 41
