Another lower NI netball title for Manukura

Manukura won their second lower North Island secondary schools netball title in a row as winter tournament week wrapped up.

They beat St Mary’s College Wellington 44-30 in the final at New Plymouth on Friday, where the top five at the tournament earn a spot at the national secondary schools championsh­ips later in the year.

Manukura were third in 2015 and won it in 2014

Palmerston North Girls’ High School finished third by beating Queen Margaret College 27-23, so both Girls’ High and Manukura qualify for the national secondary schools championsh­ips in Timaru next month.

Horowhenua College finished 23rd by beating Heretaunga College 26-25 and Feilding High School finished 25th after they beat Tawa College 29-21.

The lower North Island competitio­n will be in Palmerston North next year.

The Palmerston North Boys’ High School first XI hockey team won the bronze medal match at the Rankin Cup tournament at Hamilton.

Boys’ High beat King’s College 2-1 on Saturday in the playoff for third place, having lost the semifinal 3-2 to Christchur­ch Boys’ High School on Friday.

The Palmerston North Girls’ High School first XI finished seventh at the Federation Cup tournament in Hawke’s Bay on Saturday.

Girls’ High beat Queen Margaret College 2-0 in their final playoff game, having lost their knockout game against Westlake Girls’ High School 2-1 on Friday.

Havelock North High School won the third-tier Jenny Hair Cup girls final 5-1 over Whanganui High School in Palmerston North on Friday.

Horowhenua College was the best finishing local side, getting knocked out in the quarterfin­als and they lost 9-0 against Wellington College in the minor playoffs on Friday.

Awatapu College beat Nga Tawa Diocesan School 2-0 in their final match and Waiopehu College lost 2-0 to Marlboroug­h Girls’ College 2-0 in their last outing.

Boys’ High made light work of qualifying for the national secondary schools basketball championsh­ips by winning the zone three competitio­n in Palmerston North without a loss.

Boys’ High beat Rongotai College 100-71 in the final, having beaten Wellington College 103-57 in the semifinal.

They also beat Onslow College 106-58 in their final pool game on Thursday, then beat Napier Boys’ High School 94-38 in their quarterfin­al.

Feilding didn’t qualify for nationals, but finished 13th after they beat Francis Douglas Memorial College 94-71 in their final game of the tournament.

Feilding lost 101-72 to Hastings Boys’ High School on Thursday night, then beat Freyberg High School 69-54 on Friday morning.

In their bottom eight quarterfin­als, Feilding lost to St Patrick’s College Silverstre­am 63-54. then beat Upper Hutt College 72-33.

Freyberg High School finished 21st.

Having qualified for the bottom five, Freyberg lost to St Bernard’s College 74-51, lost to Feilding, then were beaten 70-60 by Hutt Valley High School, before having the bye in the final round.

Girls’ High finished seventh and missed the cut for the national championsh­ips.

Having lost their lost their fifthto-eighth-place semifinal 81-77 to Napier Girls’ High School on Friday, Girls’ High then beat Wellington Girls’ College 78-51 to decide seventh place.

In their final two pool games they beat Wellington Girls’ College 71-55 on Thursday and Feilding 88-34.

Feilding avoided last place by beating Havelock North High School 51-50 in the playoff for ninth and 10th, reversing the result from Friday when Havelock North won 59-51.

The Manukura boys team lost the final of the A qualifying competitio­n for smaller schools at Tauranga, losing 72-69 to Stratford High School.

The Manukura girls finished fourth, beating Te Wharekura o Mauao (Tauranga) 59-44 in their final playoff game.

Both Manukura teams qualify for the national championsh­ips.

The premier and A national championsh­ips are at the Arena in Palmerston North on October 2.

Girls’ High won their final game at the national secondary schools football championsh­ips at Taupo to finish 15th.

Girls’ High beat St Mary’s College 2-1 on Friday.

Boys’ High finished 30th out of 32 teams at Napier, after they lost 1-0 to St Peter’s College (Auckland) in their final game.

Horowhenua College was the best of the Manawatu¯ schools at the third-tier Rex Dawkins boys tournament at Massey University and Celaeno Park in Palmerston North.

Horowhenua beat Whanganui High School 4-1 on Friday to finish 13th.

Feilding finished 20th after they were beaten 4-1 by Paraparaum­u College, and Awatapu College finished 24th after they were beaten 9-8 on penalties by Hawera High School.

Manukura finished eighth at the national secondary schools rugby league championsh­ips in Auckland.

Manukura were beaten 30-6 by Mount Albert Grammar School in their playoff game on Friday.

Manukura centre Awatere Kiwara was named in the tournament team and trainer Tanu Aumua was named trainer of the tournament.

Boys’ High booked a spot in division one next year after winning division two of the national secondary schools badminton championsh­ips contested at Hamilton.

Boys’ High won all their games at the tournament and beat Burnside High School 5-1 in the final.

Girls’ High lost the bronze medal match in division one to Rangitoto College 3-3, 8-6.

Manawatu¯ ’s Greg Shaw finished in a share of eighth place at the national age-grade golf championsh­ips in Hawke’s Bay.

Shaw finished five over par, having shot rounds of 75, 68 and 78, eight shots off the leader Mako Thompson of Maraenui.

Liam Finlayson of Feilding was four shots back in a share of 19th.

Ethan Dodds, Kaleb Idemaru (both Manawatu¯ ), Bradley Mcsherry (Palmerston North) and Ryan Rooney (Feilding) missed the cut.

Manawatu¯ ’s Mudra Lakhani finished joint for 41st at 33 over par in the girls competitio­n.

Five teams from four Manawatu¯ schools will compete at the national secondary schools golf croquet finals in Hamilton in two weeks.

Freyberg High School have two teams (Nicholas Flood and Izzy Ward in one and Gemma Reardon and Mackenzie Montgomery in the other), while Feilding High School (Charlie Goodman and Bailey Ansley), Awatapu College (Jenny Gatehouse and Lachlan Elwood) and Palmerston North Boys’ High School (Bradley Forsyth and Paul Kaiser) are all going.
