Labour accepts higher Pora compo
Labour says it would drop the appeal against Teina Pora’s compensation package if it becomes the Government.
Its justice spokesman Andrew Little said the Government’s decision to file a notice of appeal was driven by its need not to make significant decisions as a caretaker Government pending the outcome of coalition talks.
‘‘But this should be fixed as quickly as it can as soon as a government is formed,’’ Little said.
‘‘I accept the the verdict. I’ve already said we will make good the recommendation of the High Court as quickly as we can.’’
He had made Justice Minister Amy Adams aware of his views, and she had told him the deadline for an appeal expires today.
‘‘They didn’t want to look like they were making a significant decision as a caretaker government. They wanted to leave options open. I can understand that, respect that, disappointing as it is for Teina Pora and his team.’’
An appeal could be dropped at any time, but Little said Adams did not give an indication she could drop it.
‘‘She said there’s an array of advice that she had received, she said an incoming government should have a look at. A compensation regime set up 20 years ago with dollar amounts then, has got to be adjusted for inflation after 20 years at least.’’
