Art of photography in spotlight at gallery
The art of photography comes into sharp focus at a Palmerston North gallery this month, with four Manawatu¯ photographers featured in an exhibition of some of New Zealand’s finest work.
Iris, an exhibition of the awardwinning photographs from the 2017 Epsom/new Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers Awards, opens at Taylor Jensen Fine Arts this week.
The official opening on Friday will also include the announcement of the Central Districts Regional Photographer of the Year. Work from four Ma¯ nawatu photographers is featured in the exhibition: Michael Watson, Kevin Gilbert, Kaye Davis and Rachael Smith.
Davis said the exhibition was a great display of diverse genres.
‘‘There are 12 different categories, so there is a whole range in there. It shows the broad scope of what you can do within photography.’’
Smith is a Palmerston North commercial, landscape and fine art photographer who helped to get the exhibition to Taylor Jensen.
She received an award for her landscape and travel images this year, one of which was taken in Italy. ‘‘We drove past this highspeed train station and I couldn’t believe how gorgeous it was.
‘‘We had a free day the next day, so we went back there and he and the kids sat in the car for quite a while while I played around. I really loved the lines of the building. It’s got softness, it’s got curves but it also has the sharp, straight lines.’’
Smith said the awards were a great way to learn about your work and take on some advice and ideas. ‘‘As a photographer watching the judging and seeing how they look at an image makes you think about what you are producing as well.’’
Iris opens on October 6 with a public reception between 5pm and 7pm. It runs until October 18.
