Boys’ High start well at basketball nationals

Palmerston North Boys’ High School have got their campaign for the Basketball New Zealand Secondary Schools title off to a flying start.

Last year’s runner’s up have gone three from three over the first two days of the tournament in the AA division in Palmerston North.

They were ruthless as they demolished New Plymouth Boys’ High School 100-37 on Tuesday at CET Arena. That followed a good opening performanc­e 94-43 win over Kelston Boys’ High School on Monday morning. And it was a similarly strong showing as they dispatched Cashmere High School 80-52 in the afternoon.

They face Wellington College and Christs College on Wednesday, the final day of pool play before playoff positions are decided.

Meanwhile, it has been a solid start for Manukura in the boys’ A division.

They started with a narrow 88-81 loss to Greymouth High School on Monday morning, but bounced back with a 83-61 win over Nga Taiatea Wharekura on Monday afternoon. They then beat Onewhero Area School 72-61 on Tuesday.

The Manukura girls side had a similar record in the girls’ A division.

They hammered Ellesmere College 88-29 to open their tournament, but fell 61-60 to Te Kura Koriki. They responded well to beat Hillmorton High School 82-31 on Tuesday.

Palmerston North Girls’ High School have one win from three in the girls’ AA division.

They were out-classed 86-50 by St Peter’s Cambridge in their first game, but they went on to beat Napier Girls’ High School 64-51. On Tuesday the lost 69-55 to St Hildas.
