CIRCUS FAMILY

- GEORGIA FORRESTER

Life under the big top

Palmerston North is a scene of fast-paced, jaw-dropping stunts as a new circus rolls into town.

The Weber Bros Circus has pitched its tent at the Railway Land and is performing another week of stunts and comedy for the public.

Its two-hour show features revving motorbike stunts, a human cannon ball, acrobatics and trapeze stunts, laser light dancing and comedic performances.

For Donna Sousa, working at the circus is her dream job.

She has travelled the globe helping to organise adrenaline-fuelled performances for a range of events and audiences.

One of the best parts about the circus was seeing people’s faces light up and their eyes widen, or to see them gasp and watch parts of the show through the gaps between their fingers, she said.

‘‘They all love it. It’s for all ages.’’

The other aspect Sousa enjoyed about the circus was its community-feel. The close-knit culture of circus life reminded Sousa of her childhood when everybody knew their neighbours and had a strong sense of community. Most of the time the troupe was one big happy family, comprising about 50 adults and 14 children, she said.

Performers hail from many nations, including France, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Mexico.

Weber Bros Circus iscalling the Railway Land home until October 15.

After that it is heading to Ashburton.

Sousa said it was very much an action-packed and adrenaline-rich show, with a wow factor that was suited to all ages.

Also, ‘‘everybody loves the clowns’’.
