Drag classes for any kings and queens
Two free weekend workshops in Manawatu¯ will give people the chance to have a go at being a drag king or queen.
Hosted by Manawatu¯ Lesbian and Gay Rights Association (Malgra), the workshops will be run by Rubydax, Vera Charles and Rex Everything, who described them as one big fabulous dress up session.
Rubydax said the workshops would be open to everyone.
‘‘It will be quite relaxed and just playing around with make-up, costume making and a bit of choreography.’’ Everything said it would be a chance for those that may be a bit curious to come along.
‘‘We didn’t want any barriers, so you don’t have to register or anything, you can just turn up and have a go. We have a lot of great things to play with, props dressups, fabric, make-up, glitter, everything.’’
The workshops lead up to Malgra’s 40th birthday celebrations, planned for Labour weekend, and participants will have the option of performing at the group’s Masquerade Ball.
Everything said the option of performing would be good for some.
‘‘There will be those that want to go further and the ball will be perfect for that.’’
Everything said the workshops, funded by Creative Communities, fit in with Malgra’s ethos of being visible within the community and wanting to hold events that help to promote acceptance of the LGBTQ + community.
‘‘That’s why having it at Te Manawa is great too. It puts it out there and that’s what we want.’’
The workshops will be at Te Manawa on October 14 and 15 from 10am - 4pm. The Masquerade Ball will also be at Te Manawa on October 21.
