Manawatu¯ name strong masters side

-

Manawatu¯ -Wanganui golf have named a strong masters team to head to the Freyberg Masters in Auckland in November.

On the back of winning the quadrangular title, the side, comprised of players over 40, is now chasing the national title.

Palmerston North’s Junior Tatana headlines the team.

He was the No 1 for the Manawatu¯ -Wanganui at the Toro Interprovincial tournament last year, but has ruled himself out of that team this year due to work commitments.

Feilding’s Tony Chettleburgh and Wanganui’s Phil Hooper were automatically included in the team alongside Tatana after their top placings in the Manawatu¯ Wanganui order of merit series.

Manawatu¯ ’s Rhys Watkins and Wanganui’s Rick Harding round out the team.

Rangatira’s Ross Geary beat out Mike Mcsherry for the reserves spot on the back of his unbeaten performance at the quadrangular tournament.

Geary will likely feature at some stage during the tournament, which includes eight matches in five days.

Meanwhile, Tara Raj, Bradley Mcsherry and Anton Ilton-maher combined to claim the Under 17 Eagles team title in Hastings.

The trio were consistent over the 54-hole event.

Raj picked up the double by also claiming the girls’ title on the back of rounds of 74, 70 and 73.
