Manawatu Standard

How the ABS rated

-

Damian Mckenzie 6: Dropped ball first-up, then not many chances for his scintillating attack, but good vision with kicks finding space. No hope of stopping rampaging Koroibete in left corner. Moved to first-five at the hour-mark, missed conversion wide out of Ioane try which could have levelled game at the time.

Waisake Naholo 6: Big chance back in the side and had easy finish for 14th-minute try, then showed further attacking threat on right flank. Huge tackle on Genia, but got run through by Folau for his try when overlap had him on hiding to nothing, then got outdone by him again for Koroibete’s.

Ryan Crotty 5: Uncharacteristically messy display. Fluffed runaround play, knocked on twice in quick succession. Not the usual glue in midfield.

Sonny Bill Williams 8: Looked a much-improved figure back to some of his more-dynamic self. Couple of strong charges making post-contact metres, terrorised Beale with turnovers from a big hit and a good strip, and handy link play, no better than offload to set up 71st-minute Ioane try. But why the grubber when hot on attack late in the piece?

Rieko Ioane 6: Off after 22 minutes for blood bin and dislocated finger but returned after seven minutes. Not much ball sent his way, but then a cracking finish with a rapid dash for the left corner late-on.

Lima Sopoaga 6: Had horror start when pressured into sloppy intercept pass resulting in seventhminute Hodge try. Bounced back, but, despite the greasy conditions, overdid the tactical kicking, and could have looked at sending ball wider. Kicked 3/3 off the tee, then was replaced at the hour-mark.

Aaron Smith 7: Good early kicking game, fine cut-out ball for Naholo try, nice break upfield and crisp delivery as usual.

Kieran Read 8: Huge presence early - winning turnover penalty, producing beautiful interplay with Naholo down right flank and being intense in the physical stuff - but came down from those heights, before beautifully putting Ioane away for his try.

Sam Cane 8: Tackling machine in 50th test, racking up 18. Outstanding early heavy hit on Mcmahon to force spilled ball, brilliant turnover win, then kept going the full 80, but had ignominy of dropping final ball.

Liam Squire 7: Worked away strongly in the tight stuff, logging 14 tackles without a miss as he keeps pushing for top blindside role.

Scott Barrett 6: No big presence, gave away silly ruck penalty advantage near halftime which built up to Folau try.

Sam Whitelock 7: Won an early lineout against throw, carved out 12 tackles with no misses, but missed the presence of partner in crime Retallick.

Nepo Laulala 6: Got his lot done before the sandy turf presented more of a beach for the scrummagers.

Dane Coles 6: Early mixup on a throw but lineout went fine otherwise. Nothing much else, still none of his well-known flair.

Kane Hames 6: Forced off in 38th minute after friendly-fire head clash with Cane. Had made seven tackles till that point and solid at scrum time, though free-kicked once.

RESERVES

Codie Taylor 6: (61st min for Coles) Threw 4/4 at the lineout and made five tackles.

Wyatt Crockett 7: (38th min for Hames HIA) Missed tackle on Hooper in leadup to Folau try, but then big presence with ball and on defence.

Ofa Tu’ungafasi 4: (51st min for Laulala) Couple of heavy hits, including an absolute bell-ringer on Foley, but a couple of notable misses and gave away two penalties - the second of which saw Hodge bang over the long-range matchsealing penalty.

Patrick Tuipulotu 4: (61st min for Barrett) Bad lost ball in charging up the guts, then not a good look missing tackle on Mcmahon soon after.

Ardie Savea N/R (75th min for Squire).

TJ Perenara 7: (65th min for Smith) Quick-tap kick-ahead nearly worked a treat. Injected some spark but to no avail.

Anton Lienert-brown N/R (70th min for Crotty).

David Havili 6: (23rd min for Ioane blood bin, 61st min for Sopoaga) Seven-minute cameo where he worked hard on left wing, then on for last 20 at fullback.
