Small raring to goincd return

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Bevan Small will put a frustrating 18 months behind him when he’s steaming in for Central Districts today.

The Manawatu¯ fast bowler has been named in the CD team to play Northern Districts at Mt Maunganui, in their four-day Plunket Shield match, and it will be his first first-class game since March 2016.

Small, who has had horrible luck with injuries, dislocated his shoulder at the start of last summer and had surgery, which ruled him out of the entire season.

But after a lengthy rehabilitation period and a full pre-season on board, he was keen to take his place in the team on Monday.

The 25-year-old Small shifted to Napier in April and spent three months working on the grounds at Napier Boys’ High School before getting back into cricket fully.

‘‘It’s been a really good move over in terms of timing because, with the shoulder surgery, I had a good chance to refresh and basically start over from scratch,’’ he said. ‘‘That’s what happened.

‘‘I’ve done a lot of work on my action and following it up with a trainer and physio so it’s been easy to build up my bowling loads. I’ve been getting strong and fit in the gym. So far so good.

‘‘It seems it’s paying off. I haven’t got any of that aching side pain I’ve had over the last four or five seasons. My shoulder’s feeling really good. In the Chapple Cup and all the pre-season the ball’s been coming out nicely.’’

Small has been troubled by a rib problem throughout his career, but it hasn’t troubled him recently and he was hoping he was finally clear of the injury.

‘‘I made a lot of changes to my action. I’ve tried to get a lot more front on and take stress away from my side so far.’’
