A koru made out of painted rocks
A giant koru created out of painted rocks was done to see just how many colourful creations there might be in Palmerston North.
Families flocked to The Square on Saturday to add their painted rocks to the giant design and have fun at the Rhythm ‘n’ Rocks event.
Heather Knox said the idea came about because Palmy Rocks had been around for more than a year, but they had no idea how many of their rocks were out there.
‘‘As a group, we have tried to get them all together.’’
With painted pebbles placed in public parks and around town, Palmy Rocks started as a way to encourage people to get outside and explore.
Thousands of rocks were out on display on Saturday and Knox said they had no idea how many to expect when they organised the event.
They had previously done an event in August, the We Are One photo exhibition, which got a positive reaction, so they decided to hold Rhythm ‘n’ Rocks as a follow to that.
Knox said the rocks they had received would be put back into city parks and reserves during November and December to ensure the hiding and hunting continued through summer.
Jonathan Kan was down at the event and said he decided to check out all the rocks as he had heard a lot about it.
‘‘I wanted to put some of my own ones in there.’’
He was an artist and said the event was a good way to encourage art in the community.
Alistair Cameron said he went to have some fun in the sun.
Cameron was enjoying seeing all the different rocks people had created. ‘‘All the different colours of the rocks and little sayings that they have.’’
One of his favourite rocks was painted with the saying ‘‘behind every ending is a new beginning’’.
He also liked the Esplanade Railway rock.
