Mixed event for Manawatu¯ Masters side
Manawatu¯ -Wanganui finished eighth at the Freyberg Masters in Auckland.
The side, consisting of Junior Tatana, Tony Chettleburgh, Phil Hooper, Rhys Watkins and Rick Harding, won four of their eight matchups.
The provincial tournament, which featured 15 teams, was won by unbeaten Auckland.
They faced Wellington in the final round in what was ultimately the decider. Auckland won that match-up 4-1.
Manawatu¯ -Wanganui showed plenty of promise throughout the tournament.
Tony Chettleburgh was in fine form for the team at No 2 winning six of eight games and squaring another.
No 1 Junior Tatana also had a strong weekend, winning four games and squaring three others.
Manawatu¯ -Wanganui started the tournament well with a dominant 4 1/2-1 1/2 win over
Hawke’s Bay.
But then they found themselves up against the powerful duo North Harbour and Auckland losing both fixtures 3 1/2-1 1/2.
Against Otago, the masters squad found dominant form as they won 5-0.
They came close against
Aorangi before falling 3-2. All three of their loses came down to the final two holes.
They then bounced back with a 3-2 win over Poverty Bay, before falling to Canterbury with the reverse scoreline.
But they closed the tournament out with a 4-1 win over Southland.
