Renwick leads CD A into battle

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Manawatu¯ ’s Mitch Renwick will captain the Central Districts A cricket side for their North Island tournament at Taupo next week.

The batsman played the first two games for the season for the Stags senior side, but when their New Zealand players returned, Renwick wasn’t required.

So Renwick, who is also the Manawatu¯ captain, will lead a strong CD A team of 13 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

They will play Northern Districts A and Wellington A on Tuesday, then Auckland A on Wednesday morning. There will be a final and a playoff for third and fourth on Wednesday afternoon.

Also in the team will be Marlborough and CD pace bowler Ben Wheeler, who is coming back from a hamstring injury, but will only play the games on day one.

Nelson all-rounder Josh Clarkson will make his first appearance of the season now he’s recovered from a broken arm he did in pre-season.

It is a young side, with Nelson spinner Felix Murray, a former New Zealand under-19 player, Marlborough wicketkeeper batsman Ma’ara Ave and impressive Hawke’s Bay all-rounder Christian Leopard.

There is also Nelson’s Willem Ludick, a seam-bowling allrounder, who arrived from South Africa at the start of the year and threw his lot in with New Zealand.

Seamers Ben Stoyanoff and Ryan Watson have been in the Stags squad in recent times, and spinner Mattie Thomas has played one game for CD.

Aldin Smith, formerly of Nelson and now working for CD, is the coach and he will be accompanied by Stags coach Heinrich Malan, with the senior side not due to play until next Friday.

■ The Manawatu¯ women’s rep team have been bolstered by the

return of White Ferns bowler Hannah Rowe for their clash against Wairarapa at Manawaroa Park on Sunday.

Rowe and batter Olivia West, who is back from university, come in to strengthen the team for what should be a tough game against Wairarapa, who beat Wanganui by four wickets in their first game two weeks ago.

Rowe will co-captain the team with fellow Central Hind and allrounder Mikaela Greig.

Wairarapa have experienced Hinds player Esther Lanser and Hinds batter Melissa Hansen, as well as impressive schoolgirls Georgia Atkinson and Kate Sims, who were named in the Hinds squad for the first time this week.

Manawatu¯ have named 13 for the game and Lorraine Moses drops out of the team that thrashed Hawke’s Bay by six wickets in their first game.
