Gaylard takes 7-3 in huge Freyberg win

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

A stunning spell of bowling from Caleb Gaylard led Freyberg to a 10-wicket hiding of Palmerston in the club cricket competition.

Left-arm seamer Gaylard took a ridiculous 7-3 from seven overs, as Palmerston were skittled for just 34 in 13.3 overs at Manawaroa Park on Saturday.

Gaylard got rid of all top seven batsmen and only four got off the mark. There were seven ducks, including all of the top three in the first over, and four of them were first ballers.

Four of his victims were all bowled and Gaylard was twice on a hat-trick.

The top score was extras with 19. No 6 Carlos Jensen scored 7, while No 8 Jamie Blackley made 5 from 27 balls. Paceman Ali Akhter picked up two late wickets.

Freyberg didn’t muck around in the chase, as Luke Murray scored 20 not out and Charles Parker 12 not out as they reached 36-0 in 7.1 overs.

There are two more rounds remaining before the playoffs and the win puts Freyberg in second place.

Marist stayed in third place with a 75-run win over Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

Marist batted first and scored a solid total of 234-5 from their 50 overs. Opener Arana Noemabarnett scored 40 and No 3 Connor Morriss 41, then after losing a couple of wickets, Hugh Symes and Liam Gunning kept the score ticking over.

Gunning went on to top score with 52 not out and Symes was unbeaten on 37. There were 38 extras.

Boys’ High bowlers Bryn Wilson took 2-35 and and Rishabh De 2-27.

In Boys’ High’s reply, opener Tom Tremain got them off to a good start, but didn’t get enough support. Tremain scored 50, but they kept losing wickets as they reached 159 all out in the last over. Ruben Love was the next best with 33.

Morriss was the best bowler with 3-27 with his seamers, Tariq Ul Islam took 2-10 from 4.1 overs and spinners Nic Carter took 2-29 and Noema-barnett, who also opened the bowling, 2-31.

Old Boys stayed on top of the table by beating United by seven wickets.

Old Boys made light work in chasing down United’s total of 192, reaching 193-3 in 33.5 overs.

United batted first and got reasonable contributions from their top three of Ben Roberts (25), Richard Woodhead (22) and Hayden Hill (43).

But aside from Campbell

Ingram, who made 33, and Braden Rowe, who scored 16, there wasn’t much resistance from the middle and lower order, and they were all out in the 48th over.

Medium pacer Jayden Richards was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-35 from 3.3 overs. There were 34 extras.

Old Boys’ top order then knocked off the runs as former captain Vili Tosi opened and scored 47. No 3 Trent Mcgrath made 58 not out and Robbie Yule also had a half century with 60 from 57 balls. Cam Harris took two wickets for United.
