Hinds’ batting takes battering in opening round

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

The Central Hinds will need their batting to fire this season if they want to be competitive.

The Hinds were well beaten in all three games by Wellington in their first triple header of the women’s domestic cricket season at Levin’s Donnelly Park at the weekend, where CD’S batting let them down in all three games.

They lost the two one-dayers at the weekend by 154 runs and 80 runs, and lost the twenty20 on Friday by eight wickets.

They will need to turn their form around before they head to Hamilton to play Northern Districts next weekend.

Sunday’s one-day game was the Hinds best bowling effort of the weekend, but their batting order failed.

Wellington batted first and were dismissed for 219 in the final over. Opener Rachel Priest had the best effort with 50, while Fran Wilson scored 41 and Liz Perry 32 not out.

Spinner Jess Watkin was the best of the CD attack, taking 3-30. Seamer Rosemary Mair took 2-42 and spinner Mikaela Greig grabbed 2-39.

The Hinds’ chase then got off to a shocking start as they were quickly reduced to 10-3 in five overs, which included two run outs.

Esther Lanser lasted a bit longer in scoring 19, then Kerry Tomlinson linked up with Hannah Rowe for a revival of sorts.

They added 84 before Tomlinson was out for 42 and Rowe was out shortly after for 43, both falling to the spin of Eimear Richardson, a former Hind.

The rest of their batters then didn’t last long and they were all out for 139 in 43.2 overs.

Richardson picked up 3-21, Deanna Doughty 2-26 and Lucy Doolan 2-29.

Vice-captain Rowe took over the captaincy for Sunday’s game because captain Anlo van Deventer didn’t play and was absent from the second innings on Saturday.

In Saturday’s one-dayer, Wellington batted first and put on a good score of 290-9.

Their openers put on a big opening stand of 129, with Doolan scoring 82 from 94 balls before getting stumped. Priest scored 44 before getting run out.

Greig got the Hinds back into it with three wickets, including Doolan, but then Wilson made 34 and Perry 62.

Greig took 3-40 and Georgia Atkinson 2-18.

CD then had a poor start and their top three were all back in the hutch early, leaving them at 15-3.

No 5 Tomlinson had the top score of 46 and Rowe was next best with 29, but they were bowled out for 136 in 34.3 overs.

New captain van Deventer didn’t bat.

Legspinner Doughty opened the bowling and took 5-26 from 9.3 overs, her best bowling figures.

In Friday’s twenty20, the Hinds batted first, but could only must 65 all out in 17.2 overs.

They lost both their openers quickly, but van Deventer tried to rescue things at No 3 with 20.

Her partnership of 28 with Rowe, who made 10, was the best of the innings, but they were the only two to score in double figures. Jess Kerr took 4-13, while Doughty and Richardson both took two wickets.

The Wellington openers then set up the big win, putting on 57 for the first wicket before Priest was out for 29. Doolan scored 26 as they reached 66-2 in 8.2 overs.
