Best win: The dismantling of the Springboks in Albany. The rare 80-minute performance showcased exactly how destructive this team can be when all parts come together on the same night. Biggest disappointment: The 15-15 Lions stalemate at Eden Park. Yes, they were shafted by some inexplicable officiating (even Warren Gatland admits that), but hard not to think they were Ttheir own worst enemies on a sloppy night. Best player: Undoubtedly Rieko Ioane. Even his own coach was reaching for the hyperbole at the end of a superb season. Consistent, classy, destructive, powerful. And as Earle Kirton would say, he’s got gasssssss. Most frustrating injury: Dane Coles’ ACL. Fabulous player but just couldn’t take a trick in 2017. So sad. Watch out for: Jordie Barrett and Nepo Laulala. Young men with big futures who took to test footy like the proverbial ducks to water. You can probably throw Asafo Aumua in too. Mr Misunderstood: A tie between Beauden Barrett and Sonny Bill Williams. Yes, SBW still has the odd brain snap, but these are two world-class performers the ABS are lucky to have. Be nice to think NZ would get that. Best Hansenism: ‘‘History is a little bit like a drought. Every day you’re one closer to it raining; every year they’ll be one closer to winning a game.’’
