Double success for Brougham

- EQUESTRIAN

Julie Brougham could not have scripted the inaugural Equitana better herself after claiming both major dressage titles.

After picking up the New Zealand Open Freestyle Grand Prix to Music on Friday night on board mount Vom Feinsten, the duo then romped home with the New Open Grand Prix title on Sunday.

Brougham had an error-free run en route to the title as she scored an impressive 70.63.

That was enough to beat out Kiwi rivals John Thompson on Antonello (69.5) and Wendi Williamson on Dejavu (68.9).

‘‘It was a good test, with no errors at all,’’ Brougham said. ‘‘The arena out there was the best surface I have ridden on in New Zealand without a doubt. It makes such a difference and is vital to us.’’

Brougham was impressed by how Vom Feinsten was starting to mature in big-stage competitions, especially after their final freestyle to music ride in New Zealand.

‘‘I am just thrilled,’’ said Brougham. ‘‘He was listening to me all the way.’’

Brougham won the freestyle to music with 72.13 per cent, well ahead of Williamson (70.38) and Thompson (70.29).

Brougham was also part of the New Zealand team who won the trans-tasman competition.

She rode alongside Thompson and showjumpers Samantha Morrison and Clarke Johnstone.

They dispatched Australian quartet Brett Parbery Rozzie Ryan, Gabi Kune and Kate Hinschen.

Brougham now turns her attention to picking up the remaining required qualifying scores to gain entry into the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games in the United States.
