Rewa trial in 2019
Serial rapist Malcolm Rewa appeared in the High Court in Auckland yesterday following the Crown’s announcement last month he is again to be tried for the murder of Susan Burdett. A trial date was set for February 2019. Burdett was raped and killed in her Papatoetoe home in March 1992. Rewa was convicted of Burdett’s rape based on DNA, but there were two hung juries over the murder charge. Teina Pora – then aged 17 – falsely confessed to the murder. He served 22 years in prison before his conviction was quashed.
