A little bit of what’s inside Palmerston North’s Youth Space is now also on the outside as a mural reflects the centre’s vibe.

The mural covers all sides of Youth Space on the corner of Coleman Mall and George St.

Palmerston North City Council student city co-ordinator Remy Waldteufel-irvine said the brief to seven young artists was to let the happenings of Youth Space inspire the mural.

‘‘So we asked them how do we take the things that happen at Youth Space – the connections and relationships and the things people get up to at the heart of the building – and showcase that on the outside walls?’’

The artists were involved in a series of workshops run by Palmerston North artist Gembol Farrell, who was helped by UCOL student Heneriata Te Whata.

Te Whata said the leadership role was a good way for her to put her bachelor of visual arts into a real-world context. ‘‘I enjoyed it and I really liked seeing young people giving it a go and developing their own skills.’’

The artists blended each other’s ideas into the mural and Caitlin Kirkwood-woollams said it was a cool thing to be involved in.

‘‘I have been a big part of Youth Space for about two years. I volunteer here. I love the people here and everything that it stands for. Having something that I have done on the walls is just amazing and I’m really grateful to everybody who made this happen.’’

Kirkwood-woollams said there were ‘‘heaps of challenges’’, including the weather, turning a small drawing into a big mural ‘‘and learning to deal with criticisms and changes’’.

‘‘It was a good learning curve that I can now put into the rest of my life.’’

Waldteufel-irvine said she was really pleased about the bright new face that the building now presented. ‘‘They did a really good job of working on their own concepts and figuring out how to wrap that around the building.’’
