Driver killed in crash
A person died after two cars collided on the West Coast on State Highway 6. A police spokeswoman said the driver of one vehicle died in the crash south of Hokitika shortly after midday yesterday. Two people suffered moderate injuries.
Two motorcyclists die
A man was killed in a crash between a motorcycle and a truck near Castlepoint in Wairarapa yesterday morning. A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed that the 35-year-old rider of the motorcycle died at the scene about 9.20am, 5km from the township. And a motorcyclist who died after he collided with a trailer near Christchurch was 34-year-old Ben Caldicott-elwell. The crash happened on the Tram Rd on-ramp to the Christchurch Northern Motorway, near Kaiapoi, on Saturday afternoon. Caldicott-elwell, from Rangiora, was taken to hospital in a serious condition and police confirmed he died on Sunday.
Woman run over
A woman is in hospital after being hit by a car during a violent clash in a beachside cul-de-sac at Papamoa in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday. Police received more than 20 calls about disorder and fighting in a Papamoa Beach street, from 8.45pm. Witnesses reported people fighting with sticks, garden tools and bats, Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said. A woman was run over by a car outside a home, he said. ‘‘The woman is currently in hospital with what is thought to be a broken leg and a shoulder injury and she is in a stable condition.’’ Police on the scene impounded at least one vehicle.
Dead swimmer identified
A swimmer who lost his life jumping off rocks in the Coromandel was a Taiwanese national living in Auckland. Ting Chang Chen, 25, died at Crayfish Bay on Friday. Police said he was swimming and jumping from rocks with friends when something went wrong. His body was found two hours after the alarm was raised.
