Finn concert tour hits Himatangi

- MIRI SCHROETER

An excited crowd filled the Himatangi community centre as Neil and Liam Finn stopped by on their summer tour.

Some waited an hour in the hall on Tuesday evening for the music to start, while others sat patiently on lawn chairs, soaking up the last of the summer sun.

The show is part of the Where’s My Room? New Zealand tour taking place in Himatangi, Waipawa, Akaroa and 15 other small towns.

Palmerston North residents Robyn and Richard Verdonk bought tickets for the indoor concert, but decided to sit outside for some fresh air and a beachside view.

Robyn said they would wait and see how the sound was before moving inside.

‘‘We’re just keeping cool. ‘‘The music will be plenty loud enough. We are not worried.’’

Robyn snapped up tickets within seconds of them going on sale as she didn’t want to miss out, she said.

Gordon and Amanda Barr missed out on tickets, but that didn’t stop them from joining in the festivities.

‘‘I knew the hall was so small and it’s hot out here, so the doors would be open.’’

The pair had a caravan in Himatangi, so they brought down chairs for the evening.

Jo Wilson has a bach in Himatangi and thought it was the perfect opportunity to hear some great music.

‘‘We were going here anyway. It seems like it couldn’t be better,’’ Wilson said.

‘‘We are really fortunate.’’

Event co-ordinator Ian Jorgensen would not comment, but a Himatangi Fire Brigade spokesman said the hall could hold 300 to 350 people.
