Becker needs lost trophies

-

Tennis star Boris Becker has lost five of his six Grand Slam trophies and needs to find them so he can sell them to offset his debts.

The 50-year German was declared bankrupt last June.

He is appealing for public help to find two Australian Open trophies (1991 and 1996) and three from Wimbledon in 1985, 1986 and 1989.

He’s also missing his 1992 Olympic men’s doubles gold medal and his trophy from his 1989 Davis Cup victory with the German team.

‘‘Mr Becker is unable to recollect where they are located,’’ said a joint statement from Becker and his London-based bankruptcy trustees.

‘‘We are currently trying to locate and recover Mr Becker’s missing Australian Open and Wimbledon trophies, settling an income payments agreement for the next three years as well as continuing our investigations into other possible recoveries, including property in the UK and overseas.’’

The statement added that the All England Tennis Club, which hosts Wimbledon, the German Tennis Federation, the US Tennis Association, Tennis Australia and the International Tennis Hall of Fame don’t have the missing trophies. Becker won 64 ATP Tour titles in his storied career after a breakthrough win at Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 1985.

He turned pro in 1984 and retired in 1999 with prizemoney earnings of US$25,080,956 supplemented by multi-million dollar endorsements.
