School shooter dies

-

When the commotion about someone with a gun began yesterday, Isiah Tichenor, 18, stepped into the hallway at Great Mills High School to pull shut his classroom’s door, but instead found himself watching the climax of a school shooting. He said he saw a classmate with a gun to his own head as a school resource officer rounded a corner at the Southern Maryland school. Tichenor ducked back inside the classroom as he heard shouting. ‘‘Put the gun down!’’ the officer yelled. ‘‘We know you don’t want to hurt anyone.’’ The officer ordered the student to drop the gun again, before two shots sounded, marking the end of the latest school shooting for a nation weary of them. The shooter, identified as Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17, was hit and later died at a hospital. A female student, 16, and male student, 14, were injured and hospitalised. The shooting comes days before thousands are expected in Washington for the March for Our Lives rally, a march against gun violence and school shootings. It came about after a gunman took 17 lives at a high school in Parkland, Florida, last month.

Drum roll for Sir Ringo

Call him Sir Ringo now, or Sir Richard to be more precise. Either way, it’s a fitting honour for the former Beatles drummer. The 77-year-old Ringo Starr received his long-awaited knighthood from Prince William yesterday. He used his real name Richard Starkey for the big event. He said the honour ‘‘means a lot’’. All the Beatles received an MBE in 1965. The other surviving Beatle, Paul Mccartney, was knighted in 1997. ‘‘I had dinner with him last week and we were both actually laughing about where we came from, and we’ve ended up in the palace and it’s now Sir Paul and Sir Richard,’’ said Starr.

Bus crash kills 19
