Kiwis can’t get enough sparkling water

- THOMAS HEATON

New Zealanders are lapping up sparkling water, as new brands arrive in supermarkets and people use Sodastreams to make their own budget version.

Instagram-friendly American brand La Croix launched in New Zealand at the end of 2017 and Sodastream is experiencing a renaissance, reporting that one in four Kiwi households now have a Sodastream.

Restaurants serve sparkling water as a matter of course.

The stuff is everywhere, but does it actually live up to the hype?

Nutritionist Bronwen King said sparkling water seemed a ‘‘little bit more special’’, and was a good alternative for people trying to cut their sugar intake.

The sodium content was not a problem.

If someone were to have two glasses Wellington food writer David Burton was skeptical at the value in buying sparkling water, but enjoyed getting it at restaurants.

‘‘From a financial point of view it seems ridiculous to pay for water in this country,’’ Burton said.

But sparkling water helped ‘‘scrub the palate’’ and he paid for a bottle of sparkling water from what he budgeted for wine.

Sodastream marketing manager Shannon Zaloum said New Zealand was reflecting an international trend.

‘‘The sparkling water trend that is so popular overseas is definitely starting to make an impact here,’’ she said.

‘‘We have definitely noticed huge growth in people only using their Sodastream for sparkling water,’’ Zaloum said.
