Varsity top table

RUGBY: Varsity have made it two from two in the Manawatu¯ club senior competitio­n.

They beat Kia Toa 29-22 at Bill Brown Park, Palmerston North, on Saturday.

Manawaturu­gby.co.nz reported that Varsity boasted a strong starting forward pack, with experience­d players Kirk Tufuga, James Oliver and Nick Grogan lining up alongside the promising locking duo of Mickey Woolliams and Ian Burmeister.

Varsity are one point clear at the top of the table, over Feilding Yellows.

They had a 43-5 win over Freyberg Old Boys at home.

At the Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North, both Linton Army and Te Kawau pushed their respective opposition­s for the full 80 minutes.

Linton Army fell nine points short at fulltime, going down 19-10, while Te Kawau lost to Old Boys Marist, 46-36.

Manawatu¯ senior rugby will be played on Thursday and Good Friday this week.

■ The Palmerston North Boys’ High School first XV got their season off to a great start with a big win over Hastings school Lindisfarn­e College.

In the Palmerston North heat on Sunday, Boys’ High thumped the visitors 52-3. Stewart Cruden scored four tries in a row, while Trevor Shane Baker scored twice.

Boys’ High’s next game is against Scots College in Wellington in a fortnight.

■ Horowhenua-ka¯piti’s club season kicked off on Saturday.

Rahui’s big win means they top the round-one table.
