Cute & crafty ways for Easter

- ANABELA REA

With four days off for many of us, Easter weekend is a great time to get crafty. These new takes on festive classics are fun enough to keep little hands busy but sophisticated enough to engage adults too.

Folded bunny napkin

To create this festive napkin look, you’ll need cotton or linen napkins (preferably starched).

First, fold a starched napkin into thirds to form a rectangle. (If you’re using a square napkin you’ll need to fold it in half, and then half again to get a long rectangular shape.) Second, crease the napkin in half to create a centre line for reference; then fold top corners down along this line.

Then fold up from bottom corners to meet in the middle. Bring left and right edges together on centre line. Now flip upside down and over. Turn up bottom point.

Lastly, to fasten: fold the left and right corners back; then tuck one corner into the pocket of the other. Pull out bunny ears first; then open up at the base.

Rainbow egg centrepiece

Try this craft a day or two in advance to create a striking rainbow gradient centrepiece for your Easter table.

You’ll need at least 20 smooth foam Easter eggs in various sizes (available from Spotlight stores), acrylic craft paint, paintbrushes, and a hot glue gun and glue sticks if you would like to fix the eggs together instead of arranging them.

Paint your foam eggs in a rainbow array of pastel colours. Make sure you paint a variety of sizes in each shade. Prop your eggs up in centre of a roll of tape or in an egg cup to keep them still while you’re painting. Leave to dry completely.

Finally, arrange your eggs down the centre of your table in a rainbow ombre pattern. You may like to carefully fix the eggs together with a few dots of hot glue to make sure the smaller ones don’t roll away. Be careful not to get any on your table top.

Fluffy Easter nests

Leave a fluffy nest for the Easter bunny to deposit treats in with these easy wool-wrapped bowls.

To begin, wrap strips of doublesided tape around a nicely shaped bowl. Then remove the tape’s protective backing and carefully (starting from either the top or the bottom) wrap wool around the bowl, pressing it into the tape to ensure it stays put. We used mohair in a suitably Easter shade of lemon, but any leftover yarn will do. Pastel shades tend to work this occasion. To de-nest the bowl, simply remove the tape and wool and pop the bowl back in your crockery cupboard.
